Van Camping And Photography

I've been following a couple photographers on YouTube lately: Thomas Heaton and Henry Turner. Both are landscape specialists and both work in England. They are similar in that they travel around in vans that have been converted into campers specifically for photographers. I also know Scott Erb and Donna Dufault who travel the US in their own camper van. The only time I ever did anything like that was when I rented an larger camper vehicle and headed up to Acadia for a week-long visit with my brother and a couple friends. It was an adventure but we had room to sleep four. These folks have smaller vans and so creature comfort is a bit more difficult to manage.

Heaton and Turner have similar styles in their YouTube offerings. Both are professional landscape photographers and both have weekly YouTube podcasts...

...and...

...they drive to a location, usually with a hill or mountain to climb, and talk while hiking using a handheld stick camera. During this time, they offer perspectives on the area, tips on what to look for or specifically what goals they have for the day. It's always interesting and they usually produce some beautiful images. Both have their own websites where they offer photos, calendars, workshops, and books for sale.

This makes me wonder if I might enjoy taking a year off and doing some wandering like Scott and Donna - trekking across the country looking for photographic beauty wherever it can be found.

Another fine photographer who does something similar (but without the camper van) is James Popsys. He likes landscapes and cityscapes, but his thing is including something man made in his photographs. Very excellent work he does and as enjoyable to listen to in his podcasts.

My hat goes off to these folks for what they do and how well they do it.
